Tips On How you can cope with diabetes


In today’s stressful life, targets and deadlines are governing people’s lives, and diabetes is becoming a common occurrence in most households. Manoj Chadha, Diabetologist with Hinduja Healthcare Surgical, sheds some light on life without a sweet tooth.

“While genetics play a role in the occurrence of diabetes, the main cause for diabetes nowadays is the constant stress of everyday life — the pressure to over-achieve, unhealthy eating habits and decreased physical activity,” Manoj says. Consultant Diabetologist Arvind Ghorgane adds, “Stress-related diabetes if unattended, can result in full-fledged diabetes over time. What used to be considered an adult illness is of late becoming common in youngsters!”


Diabetes is a major lifestyle alteratering illness. Once you have it, food will never be the same, says Manoj.
Dietary changes include trying to eat small meals at regular intervals, excluding refined sugars and fried foods. The right fruits are allowed in moderation, red meats should be avoided, and while increased intake of fibre and pulses is recommended, Manoj adds.

“Regular exercise is a must as you are moving, and consuming calories. Walking, swimming, outdoor sports, gym, yoga are excellent and must become an integral part of regular routine,” he explains.

Generally waking up 3-4 times a night to pass urine


Annual checks for a diabetic person
Eye check by an eye doctor (Ophthalmologist)
Dental check-up
Three month average glucose (glycosylated haemoglobin) test
Lipid profile (good, bad and ugly cholesterol)
Urinary micro-albumin for early kidney damage
